Serena Williams took home her first singles gold this weekend at the 2012 Summer Olympics. This is a woman that has always been a tennis genius. Serena is easily a tennis legend–she’s won 14 individual Grand Slams and is pretty much the best player of her generation. Serena became tennis’ first double gold medalist at an Olympics since her sister Venus won singles and doubles at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Serena’s crip walk isn’t a declaration of her gangster, it was a moment of sheer and utter happiness. Even when interviewed about her dance, Williams bashfully said, “Actually, there is a name,” she said of the dance. “But I don’t know if I — it’s inappropriate. It’s just a dance we do in California.” She knew that the dance’s name would be controversial, especially because of it’s connection to a street gang–The Crips–but she wasn’t thinking about that.

The moment Serena knew she was taking home the gold, she didn’t know what to do with herself. She looked up at her big sister Venus in the crowd, was overwhelmed and her sister’s proud smile reminded her of them growing up in Compton and baby–the Compton came out!

Here’s the reasons why Serena Williams Crip Walked all up and through Centre Court at the Olympics:

1. To take all the negative attention off Gabby Douglas‘ hair.

2. Since Snoop Dogg wants to be Snoop Lion now (from a Cali Crip to a Rasta), Serena’s auditioning to be the new West Coast ambassador (a position Snoop’s held since the early 90’s).

3. Serena’s all about multiple streams of income. She’s picked up nail technician skills, endorses sleepy sheets and now she’s going to start giving dance lessons. First up? Crip Walk 101.

4. Serena is passionate about her tennis. There have been times when she’s lost her cool. This time, she wanted the media to focus on her happy reactions and the Crip Walk just just enough to make sure that we’re talking about this a lot longer than we talk about her short temper.
