For months leading up to The Academy Awards, Black Twitter has been calling out a lack of diversity in the film industry with #OscarsSoWhite. When the 2016 Oscar nominees were announced, there were only white actors and actresses in the top four categories. While we all agree that there needs to be more mélange in the industry, the red carpet was divided between black and white.

Say It LOUD, I’m Wearing BLACK And I’m PROUD!

It was all black everything on the red carpet. This hue is always the go-to for the chic and fabulous for a night on the town. Black is extremely flattering on everyone and one of those looks, when done head to toe, gives the air of instant fashionista.

Dressing monochromatically with your partner is an easy way to be the most stylish couple in the room. Emerge in all-black and be prepared to own the room in black power couple style! Kevin Hart elevated his all-black tux by paying attention to detail. The black stones lining his lapel and jacket add intricate detail to this powerful look.

Details are not the only important aspect when creating your all black look. Prevent you outfit from looking flat by choosing monochromatic pieces with texture. Let your dress exude it’s mood whether in lace or leather. The sheer and lace bodice of Dorith MousDennis Diem dress is darling and edgy. Dorith is giving me gothic city wonderland: the lace is sexy while the tulle is feminine.

Wavy In White

White is not an easy color to wear. It’s not very forgiving, can often add a few pounds to your frame, and constantly has you paranoid that you are going to spill something on yourself. So why wear it? Because you automatically look ethereal. Like it’s partner, black, an all white look will have you stand out like no other. This color looks especially sharp against dark skin because of the contrast.

Priyanka Chopra wears white right! The Indian actress looks angelic in white. Chopra accents her floral Zuhair Murad dress with a jeweled waist belt. When dressing monochromatically, especially in white, it’s essential to create a shape and silhouette. The easiest place to do this is the waist. The mermaid cut of the dress also flatters her figure. The mauve lip color gives her a pop of color, yet is not too bold as to distract from the dress.

Lady Gaga has me going gaga over the ultimate jumpsuit. Designer Brandon Maxwell outdid himself when making this custom piece for the performer. The sweetheart neckline and the fabric cascading from her waist and down her hips celebrate her curvy silhouette and brings Lady Gaga to an elevated chicness level. The wide leg of this jumpsuit elongates the petite pop star (she’s only 5’1″!) and a great way to further balance the entire look.

Life May Not Always Be Black And White, But Your Outfit Can Be

Black and white is always trending. Whether it’s yin and yang or Janelle Monae this look provides balance and exudes style authority. There’s just something about pairing black and white that keeps your outfits looking timeless. There are so many ways to wear this trend: from color blocking to accessorizing, see how our favorite stars create stand out style!

Chris Rock told the crowd, “Black Lives Matter” while donning a white tuxedo jacket and slim fitting black pants. He balanced his look with a black bow-tie. The way this outfit is put together forces the eye to take in the entire look. The black bow-tie stands out against the white tux, which plays nicely off the black pants and shoes. Meanwhile, Common chose to sport an all-white tux and played the black and white trend via his accessories: black shoes and a black bow-tie. Common is looking anything but!

Kerry Washington was trying to cause a scandal in this leather bodice Versace dress. Mixed media is always a great way to wear black and white but when playing with material, especially leather, you must make sure your counter-fabric is not too light. This dress would have balanced better if the white was in a heavier material. Nevertheless, I’m loving Kerry’s makeup! A nude lip is fresh on the heels of Spring and her slight pompadour adds architecture to her look. Ladies: when wearing the black and white trend, you can always balance your body and look by wearing black on your more larger areas. Have thick thighs? Black pants and a white top will balance out better than the reverse. Want to slim your shape? Wear all black with white trim.

Whether it’s black or white or black AND white: these staples will have you looking effortlessly chic and fabulous. This timeless trend is one to add to your assortment. When dressing monochromatically don’t forget that it’s all in the details with texture and architecture.

Tell us beauties, which monochromatic style do YOU like the best?
