15-Year-Old Black Swimmer Is Training For The Olympics

You know you’re doing something right when First Lady Michelle Obama gives you a shout out on Twitter! Reece Whitley is a professional swimmer, training for the 2016 Olympics at only 15-years-old. He recently covered Sports Illustrated and was named their “Sports Kid Of The Year” At 6’8, Reece used to play basketball but fell in love with swimming once he began taking lessons, now he’s one of the top swimmers in the country. What makes the Philly native even more impressive is what he’s doing for the community. Statistics say over 70% of African American kids can’t swim but the high school Sophomore enjoys teaching other kids the art of swimming.[The YBF] 

NAACP President Arrested During Laquan McDonald Protests

While kneeling down and praying in front of Chicago’s City Hall, NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks and several seminary students from the University of Chicago were arrested. Brooks was apart of the protests for justice on behalf of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald who was shot 16 times by former officer, Jason Van Dyke in October 2014. Beyond marching and chanting, protesters also carried caskets around the Cook County Courthouse to represent McDonald’s death. Brooks and the nine others received citations and have a court hearing regarding the arrests mid-December. [USA Today]

Donald Trump Demands $5 Million To Participate In The Presidential Debate

If you’re planning to watch the December 15th Republican Presidential debate, one of the most controversial candidates may be missing in action. While Donald Trump has yet to withdraw from the race, the billionaire is requiring a $5 million payday from CNN in order to participate in the next debate. He said the network, “doesn’t treat me properly”. The former host of The Apprentice is also aware of the ratings CNN pulled in for the last debate and he’s using it as a bargaining chip. “CNN had 23 million people. It was the biggest show in the history of CNN” he said at a recent rally. The presidential hopeful also added that if he receives the multi-millions, he would donate all of the money to the nonprofit military organization, Wounded Warriors. [USA Today]

University President Tells Students That Want A “Safe Place” On Campus To “Grow Up”

Everett Piper, president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University could care less about his student’s feelings. Following the recent campus uprisings at the University of Missouri, Yale and Ithaca College, Piper penned a controversial blog thumbing his nose at students that want their campus’ to be a safe place. His blog post said, “Our culture has actually taught our kids to be this self-absorbed and narcissistic! Any time their feelings are hurt, they are the victims!…If you want the chaplain to tell you you’re a victim rather than tell you that you need virtue, this may not be the university you’re looking for.” Adding insult to injury, Piper also said, the school is “not a ‘safe space,’ but rather, a place to learn.This is a place where you quickly learned that you need to grow up!” We wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a Trump supporter. [NY Daily News]

15-Year-Old Suing Obama For Climate Change

Since the age of 6, Xiuhtezcatl Tonatiuh has been a climate activist. Now at 15-years-old he’s spearheading a lawsuit against the Obama administration for failing to ditch fossil fuels. The President recently spoke at the climate summit and addressed the United States’ issues with pollution. “We’ve multiplied wind power threefold, and solar power more than twentyfold, helping create parts of America where these clean power sources are finally cheaper than dirtier, conventional power” said the President. However this isn’t enough for Tonatiuh who said, “Talk is cheap. I wanna see concrete action and concrete promises from our country — and commitments for action on climate change.” [CNN]
