Actor Michael Jace hung his head low as he plead “Not Guilty” to murder in the shooting death of his wife April on May 19, this morning. The former “Shield” actor was charged with murder three days after her death and faces 50-years to life in prison if convicted. Jace is being held on $2 million bail, and is ordered to stay 100 yards away from his children, who witnessed the shooting, if released.
“Mr. Jace is constantly thinking about the well-being of his children. He’s praying for them. Everything is about his concern for his children,” Jason O. Sias, Jace’s lead lawyer, told the Daily News after the arraignment.
Jace admitted to shooting April when he called the cops on himself shortly after the crime occurred. According to reports, Jace in the face in front of their children then texted her father instructing him to come get their kids because he had just shot her. “My son-in-law called me and texted me and said come get the kids because he shot April, our daughter,” her father explained on a 911 recording.
Motive was not established at Jace’s arraignment hearing, but the couple had allegedly been fighting over finances–a recurring issue in their home. In an interview with The Daily News, Carlo Laune, April’s brother described his younger sister as “loving, compassionate wife who was trying to work it out” with her husband. He was unaware of the abuse. “My sister took a stand without a weapon. And I know my sister well. She was trying to protect her kids,” he said. “She was a protector.” Laune is understandably upset. “I don’t like hating people, but you can only imagine my thoughts and feelings toward a person who would do that to an unarmed female, the mother of his own kids. It doesn’t even compute,” he said. “He shot her. She’s dead. I want him punished to the full extent of the law,” he added.
Jace will return to court on August 1 date for his preliminary hearing, while his lawyers are ordered back in July for a status hearing.
