Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave has done it again! The awards season favorite took home five awards at the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards today, the beachside ceremony held on the eve of the Oscars in Santa Monica, Calif. each year.
According to reports, the slavery drama won best feature, best screenplay, best cinematography, best director for McQueen and best supporting actress for breakout star Lupita Nyong’o.
During her acceptance speech the now 31-year-old actress said, “Not a bad way to celebrate my birthday!” She dedicated the honor to her date for the day, her mother Dorothy. “That beautiful woman drove me to rehearsals every day after school,” she said. “Your love has driven me this far.”
Other big winners included Matthew McConaughey, best lead male, and Jared Leto, best supporting male, for their roles in Dallas Buyers Club. Cate Blanchett also won best lead female for Blue Jasmine.
