Robin Roberts sat down with Jordan Davis’ parents on “Good Morning America” to chat about the controversial verdict and the jury from the Michael Dunn trial. Yes, Dunn was charged, but the jury could not come to one accord on the charge of first-degree murder, they only found him guilty of three counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of shooting a deadly missile into a vehicle. Davis’ mother, Lucia McBath said, “We know that the jurors were posed with a very delicate and a very profound decision that they had to make, and we believe absolutely with all of our hearts that they did everything they could to come to what they believe was the most just decision.”

McBath continued, “We do now know that they were torn. But they’ve done the best that they can with the tools that they had at that time, and of course each one of them believes what they believe and so that’s what we have to stand on.”

One juror in particular, Valerie (Juror No. #4), appeared on ABC’s “Nightline” on Wednesday and she had a shocking confession, “I believed he was guilty.” Valerie claimed the jury’s first vote was 10-2 in favor of a murder conviction. After over 30 hours of deliberations, the vote became 9-3. She also said all of the jurors felt Dunn crossed a line when he continued to fire at the SUV as it fled the scene. In their minds, any threat Dunn may have felt before, had passed. Valerie confessed that she “believed that there was another way out, another option. Roll your window up, ignore the taunting, put your car in reverse … move a parking spot over. That’s my feeling.”

Davis’ father, Ron Davis was left very unclear, “The jury instruction on the Stand Your Ground [law] is very confusing, and I do think she did the best she could as a juror. But I do think those laws have to be rewritten, and I’m going to be one who continues to fight to have Stand Your Ground laws rewritten. Justice for Jordan will be ultimately when we change the laws.”

I agree with Rob Davis 100 percent. We live in a country where a Black man kills a teenager and he’s immediately arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Then a man like Dunn (who likens himself to a rape victim) does the same thing and can go home, eat dinner, have a beer and rest his head before ever being arrested and/or charged with a lesser crime. And let us never forget George Zimmerman–a man who’s thrust himself into infamy with “Celebrity Boxing Matches” and $100,000 paintings, after killing an unarmed teen (Trayvon Martin). We need a change. We need justice. We need young children of color to know that their lives aren’t trash and they matter.
