New York Post’s Page Six reporter Stephanie Smith has snagged a book deal for her popular blog “300 Sandwiches” and feminists around the world wept.
As previously reported by HelloBeautiful, on September 24, Smith was revealed as the mastermind behind the creative labor of love, which had been gaining a following since June of 2012. Born from her boyfriend Eric Schulte‘s lighthearted assurance that he would propose to her if she made him 300 sandwiches, the blog took on a life of its own, full of creative recipes, witty anecdotes and beautiful photography.
While the story seems ready-made for the big-screen — I call Gabrielle Union as Stephanie and Matthew McConaughey as Eric — Smith has found herself being forced to defend herself and her relationship against an onslaught of negative social media attention. After all, what kind of man makes his significant other make sandwiches for a ring? And what kind of woman actually does it?
Though Smith claims that it was just a “tongue-in-cheek” idea, she didn’t initially present it as such, even quoting her mother’s advice:
“Relationships are a marathon, not a sprint. Take it one sandwich at a time,” said Mama Sandwich.
Smith soon found that support of her project depended on female readers not believing she was setting equality back 60 years and she offered the following clarification:
Some people read into the article too literally — they truly think that if I get to 299 sandwiches, there could actually be a moment there where Eric may say, “Eh, you didn’t make enough steak sandwiches. I’m not sure you deserve a ring!”
The blog started as a lighthearted joke between boyfriend and girlfriend. I presented it to the world because I thought at least one person would find the humor in the idea of sandwiches for an engagement ring.
This project is not about me promoting myself as some gourmet chef, nor a desperate plot to win Eric’s love — or a movie deal or Internet fame.
For those who think I’m sacrificing myself for Eric, know that he does most of the cooking, often having dinner ready when I come home late from work. He also suffers through many episodes of “House Hunters” on HGTV. He does things I like, just as I make sandwiches he likes, because that’s what a couple does. These aren’t sacrifices. They are what you do when you enjoy seeing the person you love happy.
Eric is the type of guy that at least deserved one sandwich. And I’m the kind of woman that wanted to make him one.
I’m no less of a woman because I decided to make him 300 after a flip joke.
But internet fame and potentially a movie deal is exactly what she’s getting.
“Steve and I are both longtime friends of Stephanie from her days covering the magazine business for Women’s Wear Daily,” said David Zinczenko, former editor-in-chief of Men’s Health who signed Smith to his Random House imprint, Zinc Ink.
“So when she told us about her romantic, passionate, and very funny quest to make her boyfriend 300 sandwiches, our first reaction was, “That’s a book.”
As of Friday, Nov. 15, Smith has created 198 sandwiches. The book is scheduled to be released in time for Valentine’s Day 2015.
A book on how to make sandwiches for your man — as a Valentine’s Day gift? My inner feminist just cringed; it also cheered a sister capitalizing on an idea and becoming successful.
