1. Beverly Johnson Slays Like No Other!
Back in the day, models were the most important cover stars. Singers and actresses weren’t the first people to call to sell a magazine. And, no other model was quite as important as Beverly Johnson. The pioneering cover star broke barriers in the modeling world at a time when models of color were few and far between. We’ll never forget Beverly’s legendary covers.
Check them out here!
2. March 1972: Glamour
Beverly says that she had to take a typing test before landing this cover, which happens to be her very first one. She said of the cover: “They told me to take a typing test, but I acted like I couldn’t even type. I had 20 words on the page. They said, why don’t you go get something to eat, and when I got back, they offered me a 10-day modeling job.”
3. August 1974: Vogue
This cover is truly groundbreaking because it’s the first one of it’s kind–Beverly was the first African American model to appear on the cover of American Vogue. How perfect was it that the first Black woman on the cover of the “Fashion bible” was au natural?
4. February 1976: Cosmopolitan Magazine
Beverly looked amazing on the 1976 cover. We think this plunging neckline is unbelievable and still on trend today!
5. January 1979: Glamour
Beverly shows off a smile with a sophisticated look.
6. December 1977: Vogue
Can we please have that neckpiece?
7. February 1980: Viva
Even overseas, Beverly remained flawless! This cover of a magazine in the Netherlands captured her perfectly.
8. July 1980: Ebony
Beverly’s hair on this cover is a nod to the bold colors of the early ’80s.
9. August 1980: Harper’s Bazaar Italia
We can’t get enough of the gorgeous flower behind Beverly’s ear. Stunning.
10. March 1981: Cosmopolitan
What a difference five years make?! This ’80s cover is a little more edgy than the one from the ’70s (maybe, it’s Beverly’s spot-on smile directly at the camera?), and we’re here for it.
11. May 1981: Glamour
This cover is simply divine. Beverly looks amazing.
12. October 2009: Viv Magazine
After all of these years, Beverly is still one of the best models to ever do it.
