2. Queen Latifah – The Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation

Best Talk Series Queen Latifah was recognized by her hometown of Newark, NJ for her charity, the Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation. Named after her deceased brother, the foundation provides educational leadership development opportunities. Her talk show may have gotten cancelled but we’re waiting to see what the Queen will do next.

3. Alicia Keys – The Keep A Child Alive Foundation

Best Outstanding Song Nominee Alicia Keys started the Keep A Child Alive Foundation in 2003 after visiting Africa. The charity provides life-saving HIV treatment and support to families in India and Africa.

4. Beyonce – The Knowles-Temenos Place Apartments

Best Outstanding Music Video Nominee is very low-key about her charitable donations. Since 2007, she has donated over $7 Million to fund the Knowles-Temenos Place Apartments, which provides shelter in Houston after the devastating Hurricane Katrina.

5. Oprah Winfrey – The Oprah Winfrey Foundation

What more can you say about Best Talk Series nominee Oprah? Her charitable donations are legendary. From starting a school in Africa to putting kids through college and of course, “You get a car, you get a car, you get a car”, we wish we were all as giving as Oprah.

6. Wendell Pierce – The Sterling Express convenience store and Sterling Farms supermarket

While it’s not a charity per se, Best Supporting Actor Nominee is giving back to his impoverished city of New Orleans in a very non-traditional way. Wendell Pierce opened a grocery store right in the middle of a food desert. He also gives free cab rides home for customers who spend over $50. We love this idea!

7. Viola Davis – The Hunger Is Foundation

Best Outstanding Actress in a Drama Nominee Viola Davis has been very vocal about growing up in poverty. The actress admitted to dumpster diving several months ago. She teamed up with Safeway Foundation and Entertainment Industry Foundation to launch “Hunger Is” designed to fight childhood hunger.

8. John Legend – The Show Me Campaign

Best Original Music Video John Legend launched the Show Me Campaign in 2007 to break the cycles of poverty. The charity is active in the United States and Africa to support educational programs and inspiring others to take action.

9. Kerry Washington – The Allstate Foundation

Best Outstanding Actress Nominee Kerry Washington is the ambassador for the anti-domestic violence program Allstate Foundation. The charity launched the “Purple purses” drive to bring awareness to financial abuse. Washington is also very active in the humanitarian organization V-Day.
