1. The Best & Worst In The Year Of Booty
So everyone’s been calling 2014 “the year of the booty.” Fair enough. With so much emphasis on the derriere in music, TV, Film (and pretty much everywhere you turned your head), what were its best, and most uncomfortable moments? Take a look and decide for yourself…
2. Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” Single Cover
When Nicki Minaj released the cover art for her single “Anaconda,” the Young Money rapper originally broke the Internet (sorry, Kim K). Wearing nothing but a pair of turquoise Jordans, pink sports bra and the world’s most famous g-string, Nicki’s rotund booty spawned think pieces from the blogosphere and raised questions about unfair judgement on Black women.
3. Kim Kardashian’s #BreakTheInternet Magazine Cover
Oh gawd. Even we didn’t see this coming. Out of the blue, downtown magazine Paper unleashed their most provocative photo in years with Kardashian again baring her famous body, just more glazed than ever. While Kim did it as an opportunity to recreate 1982 photos by Jean Paul Goude, the photos had a dark side with racial undertones and likeness to the Hottentot Venus, Sarah Baartman.
4. Jennifer Lopez’s “Booty”
This year, Jennifer Lopez returned to her original claim to fame with a racy video to accompany her “Booty remix” featuring Iggy Azalea. While the clip featured a lot of of rump-shaking and random endorsement of honey, it also re-solidified that women can be sex symbols past a certain age.
5. Beyonce At The Grammys and VMAs
Beyonce wasn’t as uncouth as some other industry players, but she did flaunt that well-toned booty of hers. Most notably, while performing “Drunk In Love” with hubby Jay-Z at the Grammys. Then, at the VMAs, when her dancers were doused in holographic glitter and showing off their derrieres (see what we did there?).
6. Amber Rose’s Booty
As if we didn’t already know Amber had a bodacious figure, she reminded us in two memorable moments in 2014. At the VMAs, she walked the red carpet in a throwback to Rose McGowan’s 1998 chain “dress.” She also uploaded an Instagram video of her twerking in celebration of her then husband Wiz Khalifa’s album “Blacc Hollywood” going No. 1.
7. Jen Selter
Selter became an “Internet sensastion” (does that phrase ever get old?) when Instagram discovered the tiny White girl with a noticeably round butt. Selter, to her credit, is a gym enthusiast and gained her butt from workouts. Still, it was interesting how her popularity led to a story in Vanity Fair, complete with a designer clothed photo shoot, but we have yet to see Blac Chyna embraced by such magazines.
8. Vogue Published “We’re Officially In The Era Of The Booty” Think Piece
VOGUE and The New York Times confirmed their ignorance and tardiness to the “we love big booties” party, with their happy-go-lucky think pieces on why the a** became the most influential body part this year–mainly thanks to White entertainers or personalities. We guess we should be thankful Rihanna and Beyonce got mentions. Sike. Insert side eye.
9. Rihanna Accepts Her Fashion Icon Award…Booty Out
To accept her awesome recognition as Fashion Icon at the CFDA Awards, Princess RiRi showed up wearing a peach, shimmery Swarvoski crystal and sheer dress (a tribute to Josephine Baker) by Adam Selman. Ri Ri’s cakes had the Internet going nuts (literally).
10. Sports Illustrated’s 2014 Swimsuit Issue
The annual swimsuit cover was a glorified booty shot paired wit the “oh me?” grins from models Nina Adgal, Lily Aldrige, and Chrissy Teigen. As seen on the right, the shot was also recreated by the more average-sized women of America. The cover was also used by Nicki Minaj (on Instagram) in response to how it seemed SI’s photo was “acceptable” by society standards, but her “Anaconda” cover labeled as controversial.
11. Gawker’s Booty-Eating Renaissance
Chile…Gawker actually published an article on the rise of…how can we say this…anilingus, including some serious research of all its references in popular culture.
12. Buttloads of Pain: Ass Injections Gone Wrong
While celebrities like K. Michelle and “Love and Hip-Hop’s” Nya Lee have been honest about their butt injections, or “ass shots,” just because it’s trendy doesn’t make it right. As the average woman feels more and more pressure to have an apple booty, plastic surgery has risen. This VICE documentary explored the phenomenon by going to Miami and visiting its famous strip club, King of Diamonds.
13. Diplo Is Concerned About Taylor Swift’s “Cakes”
Super producer and pro-reggae and hip-hop lover Diplo for no reason went after Taylor Swift on Twitter, when he suggested we all donate funds for to get the Grammy winner a booty. A douchebag move for the guy behind Beyonce’s “Run the World”, Swift’s bestie Lorder promptly wrote a comeback and Swift herself didn’t let the criticism of her very small behind get to her by tweeting: “#TaylorSwift’s Ass is trending!”
14. Amber Rose And Blac Chyna Twerking
Rose and Chyna let their booties go HAM on Instagram in this can’t look away twerk tutorial!
15. Nicki Minaj Twerks At SOBs
At SOBs and Hot 97’s VIP Lounge, Minaj gave her adoring crowd a twerk-athon as her Beyonce collabo “Feeling Myself” played in the background.
