Angie Stone was over 300 pounds at her heaviest weight. The soul singer’s weight had ballooned while suffering from diabetes. At the time, she was dating “sex symbol” D’ Angelo, who stayed by her side and supported her despite the public’s negative response to their relationship.

According to Stone, critics body shamed her for being plus-size and made comments about her being dark skin.

“It was a cruel reality,” she revealed in a recent interview with FOX Soul. “Because of the weight issue. And because I was a dark skin girl with full lips. To them that didn’t go together. What they didn’t understand is that he was overweight at one point. They just didn’t see that part.”

Stone was silently struggling with diabetes. She was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 1999 and also dealt with high blood pressure and sarcoidosis.  She was on steroid medication, which caused Her unexpected weight gain. Because D’ Angelo had suffered his own weight loss issues, he knew how to love her through her own.

Despite the former couple being deeply in love and sharing a son together, their relationship began to deteriorate  around “How Does It Feel.” Still, she feels love for the “Voodoo” icon. She called it the “purest” love that doesn’t ever go away.

I am now diabetic-free,” she said. “And I don’t care how fat they want me to be, I am fine now because I’m healthier.”

In 2019, Stone released her ninth studio album Full Circle, which was praised for its sultry content and as a neo-soul masterpiece with nostalgic vibes.
