Does anyone remember that show Platinum Weddings? If not, the WE tv show profiled fabulous weddings that always came with a six-figure price tag — or higher!
While the majority of us would have to give up our life savings (or a kidney … or our firstborn) in order to afford that kind of soiree, the reality show definitely gave brides a skewed idea of how much they should be spending on their big day. Couples that would probably have capped off their budget at a reasonable amount might be encouraged or compelled to overspend by thousands of dollars.
During a recent chat over dinner, wedding costs came up, and it was then I realized I truly had no idea how much I was actually willing to shell out for my own special day. Although I’m not planning my own wedding just yet, I didn’t even know what a reasonable price would be to spend on a wedding.
So, I did some digging, and here’s where knowing the average cost of a wedding can help you estimate your own budget (after taking your personal income into consideration, of course). Regardless, the answer is a bit complicated.
According to a survey from TheKnot.com, the median cost of a wedding in the United States is $31,213. CostOfAWedding.com undercuts that total, stating the average is closer to $26,444. Supposedly, couples usually spend between $19,833 and $33,055. However, the website also states that most couples will typically spend less than $10,000 on their nuptials. Basically, it price varies depending on what you want.
Still, something to take into consideration is where you live or where you plan to have your wedding. If you’re hoping to have your big day in Manhattan, CNN Money reports you should be prepared to pay $76,328 on average. If you’re getting hitched in a swanky place in Utah, though, it will cost you about $15,257.
In Atlanta, you can expect to pay even less than that, the average price being about $10,793. Chicago brides and grooms are spending about $17,669, while Houston residents should expect a wedding bill of around $35,500.
