The NBA Takes On Gun Violence in Touching New Awareness Campaign

The NBA really does care.

Their newest example of that is a new PSA about gun violence with Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Joakim Noah and Carmelo Anthony. The 30-second video also stars survivors of gun violence and those who have lost loved ones, Mic notes.

The AP Male Athlete of the Year Curry told CNN he was definitely on board with this project, given how these types of tragedies can happen to anyone, including his family.

“I don’t know what I would do if I got a call if, you know, my daughter’s gone. “No parent should ever have to go through that…Whatever we can do to hopefully change our culture, that’s what we’re here for. I have a voice, and I want to share it and stop gun violence in its entirety,” the Warriors point guard said.

Directed by famed filmmaker Spike Lee, the PSA is a joint collaboration between the NBA and Everytown for Gun Safety, a movement consisting of politicians, parents and survivors who are working together to end gun violence and build safer communities. While, there have been questions to what the NBA’s intentions are with this campaign, the PSA doesn’t use the phrase “gun control” nor does it talk about policy changes, BBC News wrote.

In addition, on the org’s website there are longer interviews between Lee and other Americans sharing their highly personal and emotional experiences about the topic, including Lucy McBath, Jordan Davis’ mother, and other Black parents whose children’s lives were cut short by senseless gun violence.

The campaign has garnered a lot of attention since its debut on Christmas Day, including President Barack Obama who Tweeted his support while on holiday vacation in Honolulu.

The issue of gun control has been one of the hottest topics of 2015. From Charleston to San Bernardino, mass shootings and gun violence have been at epidemic proportions in the U.S., with politicians and Americans not seeing eye-to-eye on how to adequately address it.
