We were already excited for the New Year but we can’t wait until July 2016 for Idris Elba‘s new sci-fi role. He’ll be playing a villain in the upcoming film, Star Trek: Beyond.
While Idris has played a bad-guy in several superhero films including Prometheus, Thor and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Idris says Star Trek will be much different. “You’ve never seen me play a character like this” he said in an interview with MTV.
One of the stars of the film, Simon Pegg is also one of the co-writers of the script. While many film villains are one dimensional with the simple goal of taking over the world, Idris shares that his character is far more complexed.
“In this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist to that…It’s quite an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the ’classic bad guy is a classic bad guy’ tone” he says.
To keep fans in suspense, the name of Elba’s character hasn’t even been released yet! It was rumored that Idris might play one of the alien “Klingon’s” which dates back to the 1960s TV series. However, Pegg as well as Elba have confirmed that the Brit’s untitled character is new to the franchise. He’ll be playing a role written specifically for this film.
Check out the new trailer where we get a glimpse of Zoe Saldana as Uhura. Unfortunately, we only hear Idris’ voice throughout the clip but we’ll take what we can get!
