Michigan Senator Defends Comments Regarding Wanting To Turn Black Students White

Republican State Sen. Marty Knollenberg made some controversial comments during a hearing Thursday after seeing state data breaking down academic performance among different demographic groups. The data indicated most students who were struggling were students of color, “You mention why these schools districts fail, and you mention economically disadvantaged and non-white population are contributors to that. And we can’t fix that. We can’t make an African-American white,” he said at the meeting. Now that his statements have gone viral, The American Federation of Teachers issued a statement condemning his comments “What Sen. Knollenberg said about struggling kids in schools is racist and a major step backwards in improving education for our children.” The senator has also released a follow up, “My passion is for improving education and making sure every single child gets a good education,” he said. “We should not have failing schools anywhere.” The Huffington Post

Officer Caught On Camera Telling Black Man, “I Don’t Care About Your People”

Last month motorist Brian Baker was pulled over and received two traffic citations for not remaining in his lane. The officer on duty Maurice Lawson was extremely belligerent to Baker in saying, “Leave. Go away. Go to Fulton County (Atlanta). I don’t care about your people.” Also caught on dash cam footage was Lawson telling another officer, “I lose my cool, man, every time. Why do I got to deal with (stuff) like that? This is the (expletive) America we live in, ain’t it?” Following the release of the footage, Lawson has since been reassigned. Cobb County Captain, J.D. Adcock has issued a statement addressing Baker and explaining the severity of Lawson’s actions, “Officer Lawson’s conduct as he spoke with you does not meet our high standards, has brought discredit to the department and himself, and is not now nor will ever be tolerated.” The AJC

District Attorney Under Fire For Using Government Money For Personal Use

In attempts to avoid further investigations DeKalb District Attorney Robert James has repaid the county or his spending during business travel. Critics are questioning whether James’ abused his power by having the city foot the bills for meals and entertainment which may have been done on his personal time. James refutes that there was anything improper about his spending, which he reimbursed to avoid an investigation and possible scandal. James recently wrote a check for $1,914.81 to DeKalb County. He personally calculated this amount based on the cost of meals that exceeded the county’s $36 per day standard for food expenses while traveling. “I decided to take the high road and go ahead and pay these expenditures back because I believe that, given everything that’s going on in the county right now, it was the right and appropriate thing to do versus saying, ‘I don’t have to, and I’m not going to,’” he said. “If I haven’t violated the law, I don’t believe that this undermines anything.” The AJC

Does This Controversial Coca-Cola Ad Offend You?

Coca-Cola has pulled an ad that they say was meant to “convey a message of unity and joy.” In a one minute clip, a carload of young people arrive in Totontepec in Oaxaca, Mexico, and are greeted warmly by local residents. The two groups share bottles of Coke and then construct this giant Coke Christmas tree out of wood and bottle caps. While the premise seems simple in theory, many are looking at it as “Columbusing” where white people have come to a place that was already inhabited but colonize it as their own. “I consider this type of advertising an act of discrimination and racist, and it also promotes the breakdown of the social fabric by trying to impose a consumer culture that alien to this community” said indigenous lawyer Elvira Pablo. In an op-ed on their website, Latin American TV network Telesur added “Fortunately for Mexico’s Indigenous, white Mexican hipsters are here to save them this Christmas.” Watch the video below. Do you think Coca-Cola was trying to impose on Mexican culture in the ad? Mashable
