Horse racing is admittedly a thing that tends to only appeal to a select group in society. Of course we might throw or attend Kentucky Derby parties once in a while, but most of the time, it’s one of those sports that you’re either REALLY interested in (and heavily invested in) or you know very little about it. However it is making headlines this weekend because something major happened that made Americans proud throughout the country.
American Pharoah, a racehorse won the Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown yesterday. Firstly, Pharaoh isn’t incorrectly spelled as some people have taken issue with. Although initially stemming from a spelling error when the horse was being registered, the owner chose to stick to the name. (As some people found on Twitter yesterday, where it remains the number one trending topic.) More importantly, Pharaoh became the first American Triple Crown Winner since Affirmed in 1978. So for many American horse racing followers and fanatics, they have been waiting a very long time to see history being made. And now it has. American Pharoah also won the Kentucky Derby earlier this year.
