The man involved in the shooting that injured George Zimmerman has been identified as Matthew Apperson, WESH TV reports.

As previously reported, this is not Apperson’s first encounter with the former neighborhood watchman — Apperson appears to be the same person involved in a road rage incident with Zimmerman last year.

A 911 caller told WESH that Apperson said this was his third dispute with Zimmerman.

In that September 2014 road rage incident, Apperson claims Zimmerman threatened to kill him. Zimmerman was not arrested. In the latest incident, it appears that Zimmerman was not the person who fired a weapon.

“At this time, the investigation has proven that George Zimmerman was not the shooter,” Lake Mary Police Department Bianca Gillette said.

Don West, George Zimmerman’s attorney, told CNN affiliate WESH TV that his client was injured by glass from the vehicle’s windshield, not the bullet from the gun.

He has since been released from the hospital.

Kenneth Cornell, an employee at a nearby business, has informed CNN that he spoke with the man who allegedly shot George Zimmerman.  According to Cornell,  the unidentified man said Zimmerman was waving a gun during the dispute. The man also reportedly told Cornell that he and Zimmerman have had three previous disputes.

The man shouted to Cornell: “I shot George Zimmerman, call 911. I don’t have a phone.”

Cornell said the man didn’t know whether Zimmerman was hurt. He called 911.

NewsOne has not verified Cornell’s claims.

A police spokesperson said it appeared that George Zimmerman was shot in a road rage incident, reports CNN.

Story resumes below.

George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watchman who was acquitted in the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2013, was injured in a shooting in Lake Mary, Florida on Monday afternoon, WESH 2 News reports.

Zimmerman suffered a minor gunshot wound, police say.

The shooting involved two men and happened on Lake Mary Boulevard, police said.

This is Zimmerman’s second time in headlines this year — in January he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend. No criminal charges were filed.

After the fatal shooting of Martin, Zimmerman had numerous run-ins with the law, including traffic violations and a case of alleged assault between him and his ex-wife Shelley Zimmerman.
