Three authors collaborated on the instructional book Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life, and Joe Brewster, Michele Stephenson, and Hilary Beard were all honored with the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work (Instructional)!

Similar to the film Boyhood, Promises Kept was years in the making, as co-authors Brewster and Stephenson are also parents to a son. When he began to feel disenfranchised from education, the two began to mission to why other Black boys were struggling in school and if in the same manner as their child. Though the title is racial and gender specific, it’s in reality, a helpful guide for any guardian or parents raising a pre-teen and also includes interesting chapters on prenatal care and a section of raising a Black child post-Trayvon Martin.
