HIS SIDE

I had seen Jennifer for two years, every Sunday sitting in the same place. She had a personality that drew everyone to her, so I had to figure out a way to get her attention. I was no stranger to meeting beautiful women, but it was more than her beauty that attracted me.

Jennifer had everything that I had asked God for. I wanted a woman who I could love, and who could love me. I wanted someone I could laugh with, have funny or serious conversations with. I wanted someone who wanted a husband and who valued marriage. We are definitely from two different worlds. She has a totally different outlook about life than I do, but it’s what makes us laugh and love each other.

I knew she was quite prissy, so I figured if I brought up something about church she would be more comfortable talking to me. I have to admit, she gave me the hardest time, but I knew what God told me. I assumed she would just fall in love with me because He told me she would be my wife. Not the case! She was very clear about keeping her distance, but “oddly” we began to realize we have been around each other for two years. She and I have been working out together at the same gym every morning at the same time and not once did our paths cross! After a while, she began to let her guard down and realized how many things we actually had in common. I would tell her, “It’s amazing what you can enjoy if you allow God to steer your heart and not your mind.”

HOW HE PULLED OFF THE BIG SURPRISE

I knew I didn’t want to wait too long to make it official, so I told her to pick out a few rings that she would like. I work a lot, so I wanted to make sure she got what she liked. She showed me her choices but really “stressed” one of them.

I met with our pastor, who is also her godfather. Because Jennifer’s dad is deceased, I wanted to honor him by asking for her hand in marriage. With the pastor’s blessing, I visited privately with her mother when she came into town, and she also gave me her blessing. So, the planning began.

Her mother’s birthday was coming up and it was on a Sunday, so I figured that could be the day.  I needed it to look like every other Sunday. I had my good friend hold the ring box because I knew it would be too obvious if I had it. I had our families sit in the back; she noticed them, but I just played it cool. When it was showtime, I presented her mother with flowers, and then began to talk about my love for her daughter. I went to where we were sitting, bent down on one knee and asked if I could love her forever. She said, “yes,” and June 20th is our special day, which is also her parent’s wedding anniversary.
