Actress Tika Sumpter had her work cut out for her when she stepped into the acting ring with comedian Kevin Hart…not because it’s her first acting gig (she’s earned her acting chops through films like “Sparkle” and “Think Like A Man”), but because no one is exempt from Hart’s off-the-wall improvs and hilarious jokes.
Tika and Hart shared the screen in “Ride Along,” a silly and entertaining take on a police ride along. In case you haven’t seen it, it’s pretty freakin’ funny.
Kevin and Tika have amazing chemistry that radiates through their comedic performances. “Ride Along” is on DVD now but while your waiting for your vid to ship, check out what Tika to us about her and Kev’s dirty sex jokes.
HelloBeautiful: Did it ever get awkward when you and Kevin were doing the sex jokes?
Tika Sumpter: It didn’t get awkward with him. That’s called going for it and not caring, so people can enjoy the laugh. That’s what we did and it was really funny to be in a theatre and watch and see the reaction of people. They really enjoyed it. It was all worth it, it wasn’t awkward to me at all.
HB: What were one of those improv moments when you weren’t ready?
TS: Hopefully, you’ll get to see it on the DVD. I think there are some gag reels, some extras, there’s also an alternate ending. I’m excited for people to see, but there’s one in the kitchen where we just kept going and we just kept bantering back and forth and it was like we were a real couple. It was so fun. It’s always fun with Kevin. He’s such a professional and I feel like I learned a lot from him during that time. But, it was bantering.
HB: How did you prepare for your role and having to be around someone as funny as Kevin Hart?
TS: I’m always the girlfriend and the girl who tries to do the right thing, but don’t mess with her because she will kick your butt. I was raised by parents who definitely prepared me for the world and but I have more siblings. It’s just me and Cube in the movie, but in real life I have more siblings. To prepare, it’s like, once you get on set, you might as well throw your preparation away. Kevin Hart does a lot of improv and you never know what’s gonna happen, so, I guess as an actor of trainings, just knowing the character and knowing what you want to say regardless no matter what’s thrown at you then anything can come out that you want to. I don’t know if that’s too much actor talk. It’s just knowing your character and being able to think on your feet regardless.
HB: What do you think are people’s biggest misconceptions of you?
TS: When they come up to me, they’re like, “Oh my gosh, you’re so nice.” That always surprises me because I’m like, “I am nice (laughs)”. So, I always ask them, “did you expect me to yell at you? What did you expect?” and they’re like, “No, not everybody is very nice, ya know” and you catch people at different moments, but for the most part, I think I’m a nice person and I welcome everybody with open arms when they see me to say hello.
