The shutdown has ended, well, kinda! As we all know today, October 17th, is the day that the government needed to make a decision, or we’d be unable to borrow anymore funds toward our towering $16.7 trillion dollar debt.

President Obama signed the spending measure (short-term bill) to put an end (for now) to the historic shutdown that has kept the government partially crippled for more than two weeks. With his signature, furloughed federal employees will return to work for the first time since Sept. 30. The final bill will fund the government through January 15th and raise the debt ceiling through February 7th. Well, it doesn’t really sound like the shutdown is over, it’s just been granted an extension.

But we guess more importantly, the White House directed all federal agencies to promptly restore staffing to normal levels. Yay! Now Michelle Obama’s garden can thrive again!

Many lawmakers are very unhappy with the decision, as it still doesn’t create a concrete position on America’s financial health. And it also caused the Republicans to give up their fight against Obamacare’s implementation. Fox News is reporting that despite Republicans’ grand goals of unraveling ObamaCare with this legislation, the health law was barely touched.

It’s being reported that the fight over Obamacare rapidly grew into a brawl over the debt ceiling, threatening a default that global financial organizations warned could throw the us back into recession and cause a global economic disaster. “It is one of the most shameful chapters I have seen in the years I’ve spent in the Senate,” said Senator John McCain, who had warned Republicans not to link their demands for Obamacare changes to the debt limit or government spending bill. But they did, which is why this standoff was so lengthy.

How does House Speaker, John Boehner feel about the shutdown potentially ending and Obamacare being pretty much untouched? “We fought the good fight. We just didn’t win,” Boehner said in an interview with Cincinnati radio station WLW-AM.

At the end of the day, President Obama got mostly what he wanted. Obamacare is a thing, the debt ceiling has been raised and the shutdown is pretty much over. “Hopefully next time it won’t be in the 11th hour. We’ve got to get out of the habit of governing by crisis,” Obama said.

Let’s see how this potential solution unfolds. What do you think about this short-term bill? Let’s chat @Rhapsodani.
