And that’s not just a reference to the journey for African-American hosts. Watching Carson Daly’s path proves long fought ambition. From MTV VJ to hosting super-late night television, to hosting The Voice before landing on The Today Show, Daly is a lesson in the amount of perseverance required to remain in the hosting game, one that is given to the fickle nature of cultural trends and youth.
But Terrence’s path is a little different. For one, he’s been steadily acting throughout his BET tenure, with his biggest break being Think Like A Man and the upcoming Think Like A Man Too. (Not at all a slight to his memorable appearances as one of Tasha Mack’s many memorable love interests on The Game.) And so while timing may be a key factor for the young host, his new book The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom demonstrates that there is something in the foundation that propels Terrence J into a league of his own.
The memoir is a refreshingly humble approach to sharing one’s own worldview, not only bowing to the power of his mother Lisa Gonzales in molding his journey, but also including the thoughts of other Black men in Hollywood, including TI, Kevin Hart and Laz Alonzo, on the impact of their mothers. Yet none of his peers match the eloquence and thoughtfulness of Terrence J’s own voice.
