We have all been there time and time again. Work is not always the most pleasurable place on earth at every minute, however we tolerate it because we have bills to pay and career advances to make. But if I told you that only roughly 30% of workers in the United States are currently engaged and inspired at work would you believe it?

According to Gallup’s 2013 State of the American Workplace Report, after surveying more than 150,000 full and part-time workers during 2012, 70 percent of US workers are not totally inspired, engaged or happy at their place of employment. Additionally, of this 70 percent, the report also suggests that 18% of those dissatisfied actively engage in spreading discontent throughout the office to other employees.

How are companies combating this problem and do they even care? Surprisingly, companies and employers DO care.

While some high profile companies like Google boast perk options to their staff by way of ping pong tables, nap pods and the like, others are taking a more grassroots approach to boosting satisfaction with overall open and acceptance type cultures. By fostering an environment where employee ideas and opinions are heard and implemented, many employers have found an increase in employee morale. In totality, most employees want to know that they have a voice.

Additionally, companies are offering more flex time options to assist with work/life balance issues some employees deal with.

According to a 2012 Forbes.com article, “If employers want an upbeat, engaged workforce, they need to find ways to help employees feel challenged and rewarded by work. A couple of suggestions: offer more training and education. Also it pays to try to find a path up the ladder for current employees, and to help them know it’s available to them.”

It is beneficial to recognize that every company is subjective in how they react to employee dissatisfaction. If you find yourself spending more and more time in the dissatisfied category, take some time to assess what will make you more engaged and interested. Feel free to share these thoughts with your managers and bosses in a positive and constructive way to begin a shift in your daily work satisfaction level. As much time as we spend at work, we owe it to ourselves to both contribute and receive experience in a satisfactory manner.
