It’s being reported in Mail & Guardian (an African website and publication) that The Ugandan government is proposing legislation that would forbid women from wearing mini skirts in public. If Ugandan women wear skirts above their knees in public, they will face extreme consequences, like being arrested, according to this ridiculous anti-pornography Bill.

According to Mail & Guardian, this ban on short skirts is a reminder of the no short skirt era of former dictator Idi Amin. Not only would women be chastised for their too-small skirts, but movies, tv shows and personal internet usage would be closely monitored by officials scouring for thigh meat. That means YOU Beyonce.

Uganda’s ethics and integrity manager, Simon Lokodo explains the Bill:

“It’s outlawing any indecent dressing including mini skirts. Any attire which exposes intimate parts of the human body, especially areas that are of erotic function, are outlawed. Anything above the knee is outlawed. If a woman wears a mini skirt, we will arrest her.One can wear what one wants, but please do not be provocative. We know people who are indecently dressed: they do it provocatively and sometimes they are attacked. An onlooker is moved to attack her and we want to avoid those areas. He is a criminal but he was also provoked and enticed.”

So because a man doesn’t know that a woman’s short skirt isn’t an invite to assault, women have to keep their legs covered? I hate the blame that’s placed on women. It’s almost like that argument of women deserving to be raped because they wear revealing clothes. Come on! They go on to say that women wearing short skirts are a distraction and can cause traffic accidents because men are so enticed by their legs that they can’t stop looking while they’re driving.

Completely ridiculous! Obviously, women’s rights in Uganda are few because the powers that be have chosen to police their attire. They try to reassure women that they can wear what they’d like, just so long as it’s not too provocative.
