Black people and their undying love for watermelon is a racist stereotype with roots embedded in slavery. Which is why many Black people refuse to even enjoy the refreshing and delicious treat, in public anyway. However, there may be a way to get your watermelon fix without the unspoken discomfort of being the but of a racist joke. How you ask? Just try some good ol’ watermelon soda, complete with a picaninny mascot splattered across the controversial can! Refreshing, no?

This soda hit the shelves around 2009 and have been offending folks ever since. I couldn’t find any information detailing if they were still being sold, but something tells me that they’ve been pull from the shelves.

According to David Pilgrim, the curator of the Jim Crow Museum, “defenders of slavery used the watermelon as a symbol of simplicity. African Americans, the argument went, were happy as slaves. They didn’t need the complicated responsibilities of freedom; they just needed some shade and a cool, delicious treat.” Wait. What?
What’s surprising is the fact that Black people represent 13 percent of the population in the U.S. who consume watermelon. I guess we’re tired of being the butt of that joke?
