Serial daters get on my nerves. It really shouldn’t bother me as much as it does since it has nothing to do with me, but I’d have to add serial dating to my short list of pet peeves. We’ve all had those friends who’ve literally been in relationship after relationship since 8th grade when their parents gave them the okay on dating. Little crushes and cases of puppy love here and there are expected from young teens, but it’s not so cute when an obvious pattern of investing more into relationships than needed starts happening so young.

I was recently reading an article on Huffington Post recapping highlights from the Golden Globes. In the article’s video, my imaginary home girl and hostess of the event Tina Fey cracked a joke, “You know what, Taylor Swift? You stay away from Michael J Fox’s son.” The crowd’s reaction was a clear mix of laughs and “ooohhhs.” Co-host Amy Poehler attempted to ease over the not-so-much-joke-more-so-jab by saying, “go for it.” Not letting it rest, Fey quickly came right back in and advised, “No, she needs some me time to learn about herself.” It’s common for hosts to take cracks at their fellow celebs during these award events. But with any joke, it always stings a little bit more than it amuses when there’s shameful truth to it.

America’s sweetheart and Grammy-winning pop star Taylor Swift has been in a relationship since her Tenderoni days of superstardom. Now 23-years-old, which is still considerably young, T. Swift has had 13 boyfriends within the last four years! From Joe Jonas to John Mayer to Jake Gyllenhaal to Conor Kennedy and all the men in between, it seems as though the blue-eyed blonde is never single.

I guess to each her own, but I’d have to agree with Tina on this one. Not just for Taylor, but for all serial daters. How can you possibly learn who you are as an individual when you’re never alone? Just because you can buy cigarettes at 18 and take a shot at 21 doesn’t mean that you’re wise, mature and ready to love, or even smart enough to know what real love is. You’re actually still quite childish and very much in the early stages of self-discovery. I get that some people prefer to be in relationships and that’s fine, but to hop in and out of them like potato sacks at the county fair is a bit disturbing.

In regards to love, Swift told Rolling Stone, “You have to make it work by prioritizing it, and by falling in love really fast, without thinking too hard. If I think too hard about a relationship I’ll talk myself out of it. I have rules for a lot of areas of my life. Love is not going to be one of them.”

Her thoughts on love explained a lot regarding the long list of ex’s. To all of my youngins reading this, please do the opposite. If there’s any area in your life where you should have solid rules set in place, it’s love. You don’t have to overthink, but set standards for your relationships. Get to really know who you are first, and then get to know the people you choose to date. If you’re not ready to commit and settle down, don’t and just have fun. If you are ready to commit, ask yourself why and if the person is worth it; make a list of these answers if you need to.

Love isn’t a game or a contest. There’s no prize for the chick who ‘s had the most boyfriends. The only thing that comes out of serial dating is a jar of broken hearts and a girl who still doesn’t know who she really is and what she really wants–and maybe a hit song if you’re musically inclined like Taylor.
