Late last week, my daughter and I were in the book store. The first section she always wants to go to first is the kids section. I happily accepted. While looking around for books that she may like it dawned on me that I really didn’t know the best books to purchase. Usually what I do is buy the books that she gravitates to. This tactic worked when she was younger but now that she is older she is yearning for more detailed and animated stories.

After this visit, I decided that I wanted to find a viable resource that provided me with a list of notable books for my child’s age group. I started searching on the internet and low and behold I found one. Each year the committee for  The American Library Association provides a list of notable children’s books. According to the Notables Criteria, “notable” is defined as: Worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding. As applied to children’s books, notable should be thought to include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (birth through age 14) that reflect and encourage children’s interests in exemplary ways.

Maybe I am totally alone in this but I didn’t know that such a list existed. It groups the books in age categories and provides a short synopsis of each book. It’s perfect!! I am so excited that I found this. It’s so amazing to me because as parents we think we know everything but the funny party is we don’t and we are learning just as much as our kids are. I am excited to make our next trip to the bookstore.

Check out the list below.
