On Tuesday, June 28, a high school principal from the south suburbs of Chicago was fired after banning a Black student from attending her prom.
According to the Daily Southtown, the Homewood-Flossmoor school board voted to let go of Principal Ryan Pitcock, yet the reason wasn’t revealed. However, Board President Richard Lites stressed that he believes the board made the right decision. “As a board, we acted in the best interest of our staff, community and students,” he said.
Due to his four-year contact, Pitcock will still be paid his salary with benefits until June 30, 2017, the newspaper noted.
Last month, Pitcock came under fire when he banned student Taiylar Ball from attending the annual dance because she used profanity while reciting her Dear Black Girls poem during the school’s talent show. Apparently the school took issue with the teen using the n-word and a slang term for women’s breasts.
Yet, as one can see in the video, Ball stressed that she used those words to combat Black stereotypes and to empower women, the paper pointed out. However, the teen does admit she didn’t get approval from the show’s sponsor, but she also noted that they didn’t check in with each other about the poem’s content.
Earlier this month, the honor student told JET Magazine, “Prom is like a Cinderella thing. You think about it when you’re young, you wait for it and for it to be taken away from you, it’s very hurtful, especially from your school who you love so much.”
