If you’ve ever gone to a bar or a night club, the bouncer typically stamps an “X” or some sort of identifying mark on your hand. Oftentimes the stamp indicates whether or not you’re old enough to drink or it acknowledges your ability to sit in VIP.
Unfortunately, none of these scenarios were the case for Louisiana State University (LSU) freshman, Taylor Ward. When she decided to patronize Reggies, a bar in Baton Rogue, Louisiana, Taylor had the “N-Word” stamped on her hand.
When she brought it to the attention of the bar manager he was allegedly nonchalant about the situation, “It’s [just] a stamp,’ he said.
However, to Taylor, the blatant act of creating such a racially insensitive marker is the issue. “It was obvious that the design of the stamp was intentional,” reports Clutch Magazine.
Taylor also said there were several other bar patrons that had been branded with the word. “I just don’t understand why we’re still having to deal [with] racist incidents like this in 2015,” she tweeted.
Once the photo went viral, Taylor received an influx of negative comments, prompting her to delete the original photo. She’s received tweets saying she shouldn’t be surprised something like that happened in Louisiana as well as she should have known better than to step into an establishment with a confederate flag.
“The stamp spelling out “nigger” backwards was intentional, whether y’all want to admit it or not…don’t come in my mentions telling me it’s upside down & backwards. The point is that someone had to do that on purpose,” she said on social media.
Commentators have also replied to Taylor’s incident with a list of other bars that she could have patronized within the area.
The young woman should be able to eat, drink and be merry wherever she chooses. She shouldn’t have to pick and choose places based on the likelihood of encountering racism. Our heart goes out to you Taylor!
