A community is mourning the death of a little girl killed over the weekend by a pit bull.

Amiya Dunston was attacked by a 2-year old pit bull named Kane, while she was staying with her father.

A next-door neighbor told the New York Post ,’He was holding her somewhere on the side — I don’t know if it was the ears or the neck — and he was throwing her around like a rag doll.’

The neighbor continued saying, “The two [other] little girls ran down the street, screaming, ‘Help! Help! Help!’ I tried to take my broom and push the dog off through the fence. And the doctor up the block was trying to help, too. He threw a garbage can at the dog, but he wouldn’t let her go.’

When police arrived, the dog charged towards them and was shot three times before he died. The little girl was rushed to the hospital, where she passed away hours later from mortal injuries.

The man who raised Amiyah, Brian Willis, made a statement saying, ‘Amiyah Kayla was a phenomenal little girl who has touched many lives with her presence, smiles and laughs. We thank you for all your support and prayers. Just please let us mourn our terrible, tragic loss.’

As a family prepares to bury their child, we once again ponder the safety of having pit bulls around children. While some people associate the animals with being loving protecters, there are countless stories of vulnerable children being harmed or killed from these attacks.

What do you think? Is it safe to have pit bulls as a family dog?
