Richard Matt, one of the two escaped murderers from an upstate New York maximum-security prison, was shot and killed Friday, by officers involved in a three-week manhunt, reports CNN.

According to reports, Matt shot at a driver in a camper near Malone, New York, and the driver called 911. When officers arrived, gunfire broke out and Matt was killed.

New York State Police believed that Matt and his accomplice, David Sweat, might have been headed to Canada. Officers are still searching for Sweat but don’t have him in their sights just yet.  However, 1,100 plus officers who are pursuing him believe they have good leads.

Two prison employees have been charged in connection with the aiding the men’s escape on June 6, and authorities are looking into possible breaches of security that allowed the fugitives to escape.
