We told you that the 2014 midterm elections were a big Black deal, and it was! Mia Love was elected as the first Black female Republican elected to Congress. She’s also the first Haitian-American to serve in the Capitol. Love recently told Newsweek, “I’m perfectly comfortable in my skin. My parents always told me, ‘In order for people to see you as an equal, you need to act as an equal and be an equal.’ ”

And Love has done that and more. “Tonight you have made history!” Utah’s Mia Love told supporters after winning the state’s 4th House district. “Many of the naysayers out there said that Utah would never elect a Black Republican LDS (Latter-day Saint) woman to Congress. Not only did we do it, we were the first to do it!” The pro-life, pro-gun congresswoman who holds a concealed weapons permit, will be making waves in the heavily Democrat-leaning Congressional Black Caucus, which she says she’ll join. “I’m kind of a nightmare for the Democratic Party,” Love said on the campaign trail earlier this year. “They don’t want me there. But I’m coming.”

You know who also won? Democratic North Carolina state Rep. Alma Adams! She beat out Republican and former TV and radio personality Vince Coakley. According to reports, Adams had the support of Emily’s List, a group that works to elect Democratic women candidates who support abortion rights and Coakley received the North Carolina Right to Life’s endorsement.

And guess who else? Our favorite mayor-turned-Senator, Cory Booker. He’s scored his 6th year in the Senate. Booker served seven years as the mayor of Newark before winning last year’s election to replace the late U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg. Booker’s recent win extends Democrats’ winning streak in New Jersey U.S. Senate races to 38 years.

“I’m looking forward in politics to be someone who represents the best of New Jersey values, the best of our national values. We have too much partisan gridlock in Washington,” Booker said in his victory speech. “We need leaders in Washington who learn we get so much further when we reach across the aisle. We need to define ourselves not by how well we tear down each other but by how much we build up America,” Booker said.

And while these Black wins are pivotal for us, it’s still upsetting to know that the Republicans have ripped the Senate away from the Democrats. Now the GOP has full control of Congress. *gulp* This also means that the Republicans have the power to pin President Obama down during his last two years in office. This is the largest majority since World War II. President Obama is set to make a speech this afternoon. We’re excited to see what he’s got to say about this GOP takeover.
