Tensions are rising in Nigeria as President Goodluck Jonathan decided to ask the U.S., Britain, France and China for help. CNN is reporting that Goodluck Jonathan’s efforts to dominate Boko Haram, the Islamic terrorist group who kidnapped over 300 Nigerian school girls, has been largely ineffective. So much so that there was another violent and intense attack this week that left more than 300 people dead and burned alive. The militant group seems to be sending a message to the powers that be in Nigeria who are attempting to find the girls.

Boko Haram militants attacked Gamboru Ngala, a remote state capital near Nigeria’s border with Cameroon that has been used as a staging ground for troops in the search for the missing girls. At least 310 people were burned alive by the terrorist group. I am starting to understand a bit better why Goodluck Jonathan’s actions towards finding the girls have been without fanfare, seemingly without urgency and strategic–and that’s because the Boko Haram is violently unapologetic in the way that they threaten the Nigerian government’s attempts to recover the girls.

When going against a group like the Boko Haram, you have to have a strategy. With this latest attack, it’s obvious that the terrorist group is being funded. The frightening group arrived in Gamboru Ngala wearing military uniforms and riding in armored personnel carriers. They shouted, “Allahu Akbar” — “God is great” — and fired rocket-propelled grenades into the crowd and tossed explosive devices into the busy outdoor market. This assault lasted a shocking 12 hours!

When marketgoers tried to take shelter in shops, they found themselves in their own fiery coffins, as they were burned alive by gunmen who set fire to a number of the businesses. The Nigerian soldiers who were in the village fleed because they couldn’t hold off the attack.

The Boko Haram even went as far as to attack the police station. After much resistance, the terrorist group used explosives to blow the roof off the building, witnesses said. They said 14 police officers were found dead inside. When residents returned to their village, they found 310 dead bodies.

I have no idea what is going to happen to Nigeria, all I can say is that as it stands now, things aren’t looking too great. My heart goes out to Nigeria and I pray that the help that Nigeria receives from the United States, China, Britain and France will be enough to not only #BringBackOurGirls, but guarantee all of Nigeria’s safety from the Boko Haram.
