Prince Drops Surprise New Single, ‘The Breakdown’
Everyone in the music industry is full of surprises these days, and Prince is no exception. Following the news of his upcoming album and new partnership with former record label Warner Bros., the Purple One dropped his first single without warning!
Shortly before midnight on Friday, the living legend released the first song off his forthcoming project titled “The Breakdown” on iTunes. The power ballad opens with the lyrics “Listen to me closely as the story unfolds/This could be the saddest story ever been told”.

Prince shared his music-making process during an interview with Arsenio Hall last month. “There’s a song we’ve just written called, ‘The Breakdown,’” he said. “One of the things that we try to do, though, is wait until we have other songs that go together with our favorites…That’s why it takes a long time to come out with albums these days. You know, not being under contract, there’s no rush.”
Under Prince’s new partnership with Warner Bros. (he left the “slave” label 18 years ago), the company “will release previously unheard material and a digitally remastered, deluxe 30th anniversary edition to the 1984 soundtrack album Purple Rain,” according to reports.
