Yahoo! CEO, Marissa Mayer  made headlines earlier this year for banning her employees from working from home, and this week Hewelett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman also discouraged her staff  from working remotely. But at least one woman executive, co-founder of BET, Shelia C. Johnson, thinks the policy is too extreme.

In an internal Yahoo! HR memo that was leaked to the public earlier this year, Mayer wrote, “Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home…we need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”

Johnson, who is currently the CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts as well as  president of WNBA’s Washington Mystics, weighed in at The Women’s Media Awards in New York. “I’m not quite sure where she’s going with that,” she responded to Mayer’s controversial policy.  “I have over 2,000 employees — I do have flex-time for men and women. So I’m not going to say it’s a gender issue. I just think that life has gotten so complicated that sometimes I do worry about children and the way they’re growing up. There are times when parents have got to be home, but we also can still work from home and still be able to accomplish just as much.”

Lean In author, Sheryl Sandberg credits her career success, in part, to being allowed to work from home and have a flexible schedule. The author says she was able to balance raising children while climbing the proverbial corporate ladder. As with so many other women who feel they didn’t have to choose between work and family, Sandberg managed to champion both.

One would think Mayer would be a bit more sensitive towards the flexibility of working remotely, considering the Yahoo! boss is also a new mother, but it doesn’t seem like she’s going to budge.

Do you agree with her policy or think it’s ridiculous? Let’s chat! @Rhapsodani.
