With the Oscar’s taking place this Sunday, and “Precious” receiving 6 nominations, we take a look back at black female Oscar winners and nominees in Academy history.

At the dawn of the 21st century in 2001, Halle Berry received an Academy Award for Best Actress in “Monster’s Ball.” She was the first Black woman to win the award as Best Actress since the Academy of Motion Pictures had started awards presentation in 1927. Black women have been woefully absent from the academy class for approximately 82 years.
