Take a look at our favorite celebrity couples that are, that were, that can’t seem to decide between make-up and break-up, and even those that keep the entire thing under wraps.
Diddy and Cassie
Rumors about Sean “Diddy” Combs being romantically linked to singer Cassie Ventura circulated for years. Neither Cassie nor Diddy have confirmed or denied directly, but the two have been photographed extensively together and hints on Twitter leave most of us convinced the two are dating. Tabloids began reporting the couple’s engagement in 2008, but Combs’ reps quickly squashed the story, saying it was a complete fabrication. I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned!
Nelly and Ashanti
Nelly and Ashanti took great pains to remain hush-hush and avoid confirming their relationship over the few years they were continually spotted together. The two were constantly photographed out and about together, kissing, holding hands and cuddling, but both parties continued to claim they were “just friends”. They both remained committed first and foremost to their careers while still making time to enjoy each other’s company. Nelly’s made it clear he only wants to get married once: Will Ashanti be the one?
Usher and Tameka Foster
Usher and on-again, off-again love Tameka Foster’s relationship was riddled with drama. The couple was engaged in 2007. Foster brought three children into the marriage from two different men and was the subject of scorn by many gossip outlets and fans. After canceling their first wedding planned for July 2007, the couple was ultimately married in August 2007. Tameka suffered a cardiac arrest before going under the knife in Sao Paolo for cosmetic surgery. The couple had two children together, but filed for divorce in June 2009 after being estranged for nearly a year. For those of you counting: If that timing is true, the couple spent almost half of their 2 year marriage apart.
Christina Milian and The-Dream
Christina Milian and The-Dream wed in Vegas in September 2009. Christina gave birth to their daughter, Violet, in March 2010 as rumors of their failing relationship began to circulate. According to statements by the couple, they had already decided to call it quits as of late 2009, but did not share those plans publicly in an effort to protect their daughter. Photos of The-Dream canoodling in the Caribbean with his assistant, Melissa Santiago, surfaced and the fact that he wasn’t wearing his wedding band at the time confirmed the splitsville rumors were true.
Nas and Kelis
Musical power-couple Nas and Kelis met at the MTV Video Music awards in 2002 and quickly made things official by marrying in Atlanta in July of 2005. The couple was expecting their first child in 2009, but a seven-months-pregnant Kelis filed for divorce. The couple was surrounded by scandal at the end of their relationship when a sex tape portraying Kelis with another man was sent in to the Wendy Williams Show. Adding fuel to the tabloid fire, Kelis gave birth to a baby boy on July 21, 2009 while her estranged hubby was out partying in the Queensbridge Projects. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but they do make it dunzo.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
This May/November romance had many skeptics claiming it couldn’t last, but one $2.5 million diamond engagement ring and twin boys later, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are still going strong. With no formal engagement announcement or confirmation, Cannon and Carey married in the Bahamas in April 2008. The couple renewed their vows for their two-year anniversary — marking the occasion with an even bigger engagement ring replacement — and are expecting twins in May 2011.
Kanye West and Alexis Phifer
Kanye West had a rough go of it in 2007 and 2008. In addition to dealing with his mother’s death, West broke off his engagement with long-time girlfriend Alexis Phifer. West and Phifer had been dating on and off since 2002 and got engaged shortly after Donda West’s sudden death. Kanye became consumed by plans for this Glow in the Dark tour, however, and the relationship suffered for it and the couple split in April of 2008. While we didn’t get to see a what a Yeezy wedding would look like, we did get 808’s and Heartbreaks.
Rihanna and Chris Brown
The domestic abuse scandal between Rihanna and Chris Brown began on Grammy night 2009 and the exes still manage to make headlines. R&B royalty in their own right, the couple stepped out together in 2007 but remained coy about the status of their relationship. Sources told gossip mags the couple had hit a “bumpy patch” in February 2009 but no one could have anticipated how far it would go. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault charges and cannot come within 50 yards of RiRi.
