Deborah Cox – the low-key singer with the powerhouse vocals – is returning to Broadway. The three-time Juno winner will play the lead in a new musical about the late iconic American performer Josephine Baker. Born in St. Louis, Baker rose to fame in France as a singer, dancer and actor in the 1930s and later became active in the civil rights movement in the U.S. (If you didn’t know, Beyonce’s “Deja Vu” was inspired by Baker’s infamous Banana Dance at the Folies Bergère in Paris, France in 1927). Cox, who was born in Toronto and now lives in Miami, was last on Broadway in the 2004 musical “Aida.” In February, she gave birth to her third child.
