The Met Gala brings out the biggest names in entertainment for a night celebrating spectacular style. “Fashion prom” demands the most dramatic gowns on the red carpet and our favorite celebrities always deliver from Beyonce’s fiery Givenchy to Lupita’s fringe Prada dress. Everyone wants to wear the most memorable gown but quite a few dresses miss the mark. Ahead, the best and worst Met Gala gowns of all time.

2. Beyonce in Givenchy

BEST: It was pure Beyonce (cinched waist, cleavage and slit up to there) but the dramatic train and fire-inspired print was decidedly high fashion. Flawless, indeed.

3. Kim Kardashian in Givenchy

WORST: Kim Kardashian’s first Met Gala appearance landed her on many a worst-dressed list. The Givenchy floral printed turtleneck gown was so universally criticized in fact it spawned hundreds of Grandma’s couch memes that still garner laughs to this day.

4. Rihanna in Stella McCartney

BEST: Just when crop tops started getting the formal treatment, Rihanna reminded us that she’s always ahead of the trend in a midriff-baring top and skirt that was equally sexy and sophisticated.

5. Lupita Nyong’o in Prada

WORST: In a rare misstep for the fashionable star, Lupita donned a fringe, embellished Prada gown that did little to flatter her beautiful frame. The headpiece and asymmetric hairstyle felt overdone.

6. Jennifer Lopez in Tom Ford

BEST: Celebrities were generally confused by the punk theme of the 2013 Met Gala, but Jennifer Lopez nailed it. Her printed Tom Ford gown and heavy smoky eye rendered the sexiest interpretation of punk culture we’ve ever seen.

7. Solange in 3.1 Phillip Lim

WORST: Solange is one of the most fascinating dressers on the red carpet but this look left us confused. The cropped cut left fans disappointed as did the ill-fitting flared dress designed by Phillip Lim.

8. Rihanna in Tom Ford

BEST: One of the first to wear Tom Ford’s womenswear gowns, Rihanna sizzled in his sexy second skin dress and her hair made the look even more fascinating at the 2012 MET Gala.

9. Madonna in Riccardo Tisci

WORST: Madonna’s reputation for controversy is no excuse for this confusing getup on the red carpet in 2013. The Givenchy blazer, chains, lingerie and boots felt more like a Halloween costume than formalwear fit for a gala.

10. Gabrielle Union in Prada

WORST: We love Gabby but her Prada getup at the 2014 Met Gala made us scratch our heads. The flared skirt swallowed her frame and the feathers and embellishment made the look too busy.

11. Chrissy Teigen in Marchesa

WORST: Funny gal Chrissy Teigen wore this gown at the 2017 MET Gala, but this dress is kind of wearing her. The flowers look like popcorn and even she doesn’t look like she loves the dress.

12. Rihanna in Comme des Garçons

BEST: Rihanna gave us a LEWK for the 2017 MET Gala wearing Comme des Garçons. Looking like she was adorned in a floral bouqet, the gladiator sandals looked like stems up her legs.

13. Lupita Nyong’o in a shimmery green dress

BEST: Lupita Nyong’o had to school Vogue on her historical hairstyle when they tried it by comparing her hair to Audrey Hepburn. Nevertheless, this entire look had EVERYONE talking.

14. Halle Berry in Versace

WORST: Halle Berry attended her first MET Gala in 2017. She wore a custom Versace jumpsuit but the ensemble just had too much going on for the award winning actress.

15. Kerry Washington in Michael Kors

WORST: Kerry Washington attended the 2017 MET Gala in this cutout dress and blunt bob. Unfortunately, it was a major miss for our Scandal star.

16. Nicki Minaj in Moschino

WORST: Jeremy Scott designed this bondage-inspired dress for Minaj. It looked a little bit more trashy than classy for the 2016 MET Gala.
