Former Jets running back Joe McKnight was fatally shot on Thursday afternoon after an argument at an intersection outside of New Orleans.
According to Newsday, a witness said she was leaving a store in the area and saw a man at the intersection yelling at another man, who was trying to apologize. Afterwards, “the man yelling shot the other man more than once,” she said. McKnight was only 28-year-old.
“She said the shooter shot the man, stood over him and said, ‘I told you don’t you [expletive] with me.’ Then he fired again,” she said.
In a statement, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said, “At approximately 2:43 p.m. today we received a call of a shooting that occurred here at Holmes [Boulevard] and Behrman Highway (in Terrytown).”
He added: “Our officers arrived on the scene and immediately began giving CPR to an individual who was shot and lying on the ground, with EMS and others assisting at this location.”
The suspect involved in the shooting has been identified as Ronald Gasser and the 54-year-old has been taken into custody, says ESPN.
“Mr. Gasser did, in fact, shoot Mr. McKnight. We will be releasing additional details as we get through these interviews with these witnesses,” Normand told reporters. “Mr. McKnight did not have a gun in his possession.”
McKnight played for the University of Southern California Trojans from 2007-2009 and was drafted into the NFL in 2010 to the New York Jets, before he joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014. At the time of his death, McKnight was playing football in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos.
“Joe McKnight was a loving father and a genuine, kind-hearted person,” the Jets said in a statement. “It is sad when life is taken in what appears to be such a senseless act of violence. Joe, you will be missed.”
There was an outpouring of Tweets from McKnight’s colleagues and his fans when news hit of his death:
McKnight is the second NFL player to die as a result of an apparent road rage incident this year. HelloBeautiful previously reported that NOLA Saints defensive end Will Smith was killed in a similiar situation this April.
Sending our condolences to the McKnight family.
