Dr. Sebi, famous holistic medicine professional and self-identified healer, died this week in Honduras while in custody. He was 82 years old.

A statement on Sebi’s Instagram page said:

“However, his legacy and vision will live on through us all. They will not shut us down —They will not silence us! Please stand beside us in these moments of great anguish. Do not accept the propaganda of other people or news outlets. This is the only Dr. Sebi approved channel and has always and will always be his only one true voice. We will provide updates and videos of Dr. Sebi’s last moments in Honduras soon.”

According to his website, Sebi was born Alfredo Bowman in Honduras in 1933 and spent “decades studying the plants and herbs of North, South and Central America, Africa and the Caribbean.” Sebi began a line of products dubbed “Cell Food and has treated celebrities such as Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, actor Steven Seagal and iconic singer Michael Jackson,” Hip-Hop Wired noted.

However, Sebi was also a controversial figure. Over the years, he’s claimed he could cure AIDS, cancer, STDs, diabetes, and other ailments with herbs and other natural treatments. But it’s important to point out that reputable medical sources and organizations, including the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, refute any claims that holistic treatments can cure any of those diseases on their own.

The details surrounding Sebi’s death are questionable: According to Rolling Out, he caught pneumonia while in jail for suspicion of money laundering, but others on Twitter say his passing was a conspiracy to silence the impact of his work.
