Almost as soon as she was crowned, new Miss Teen USA Karlie Hay found herself in the middle of a media firestorm after old tweets from her Twitter account showed her using the N-word on multiple occasions. Naturally, the public response ranged from outrage and disbelief. Some even demanded that her crown be taken away. Now, she’s speaking out about the controversy for the first time in an exclusive.
Hay sat down with Good Morning America today to explain herself in reference to a series of old tweets from 2014 that showed her freely using the N-word repeatedly. In addition to offering another apology to coincide with the one she gave Monday, Hay also has the firm support of the Miss Universe Organization behind her.
In the exclusive interview, she stated she was a young 15-year-old girl back then who made a mistake. She then blamed her words on the music she and her friends listen to. Hay summed up the interview by acknowledging that her words were not okay, and admitted that she is embarrassed and ashamed of her prior actions.
