Do you like your grits savory, or sweet?
This question has been destroying friendships and causing distrust between members of the Black community. Social media battles waged through hashtags #sugar or #salt have catapulted Black America into a food civil war.
Yep, it’s that serious.
Charla Draper, former food contributor for Ebony and Southern Living attributes the debate to upbringing.
“Most people eat grits the way they did as children. It’s a comfort food flavored with strong emotional feelings, including memories of home.”
Which is why everyone is taking this so damn seriously!
The food war seems to have roots in regional origins–with Kathleen Purvis, Food Editor for The Charolotte Observer citing descendants of those who moved away from the south during the civil war as the purveyors of the sugar grits recipe.
Whatever the reason, Black folks have been very vocal about what they prefer. And like Young Metro, if you don’t season your grits like I do, I don’t trust ya!
