Life comes at you fast.
And no one is more aware of this today than designer and the former wife of Damon Dash, Rachel Roy.
Last night, Beyoncé debuted her visual and sixth studio album, Lemonade. The body of work, called a “conceptual project based on every woman’s journey of self-knowledge and healing,” can be argued as her most personal to date, covering everything from childhood lessons to her husband’s alleged infidelity.
Queen Bey gets candid and her lyrics don’t leave much room for doubt over the infamous 2014 MET Gala elevator fight between her husband, Jay Z and her sister, Solange Knowles.
On the fourth song of the album, Sorry, Beyoncé says: “Middle fingers up, put them hands high. Wave it in his face, tell him, boy, bye. Tell him, boy, bye, middle fingers up. I ain’t thinking ‘bout you… He better call Becky with the good hair.”
The quote was re-tweeted and joked about, but it was not made clear at all by the lyrics who exactly she was referring to.
Until a few hours later, when Rachel took it upon herself to post, perhaps, the stupidest thing she could have ever thought of.
For God knows why, Roy decided to Instagram a photo of herself and a friend that said, “Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. #nodramaqueens”
Not having to read between the lines here, it seemed Roy was claiming the role of “Becky.”
In any other circumstance this may seem insignificant, except for the fact that Roy and Jay Z have been the subject of rumors before.
Yes, these rumors stem back to 2014 as well: As background, Solange wore a Rachel Roy dress and attended the 2013 MET Gala with her the previous year. But in 2014, sources allege Solange found out about Roy and her brother-in-law’s inappropriate relationship and exploded. Thus, the elevator fight.
No party has ever confirmed or denied the claims— to. this. day.
Days after #ElevatorGate, Jay Z and Beyoncé missed the wedding of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in Paris. FYI: Roy was in attendance and is a good friends with Kimmy.
Roy and Jay Z’s relationship goes back to the mid-’90s at Roc-A-Fella, where she started off as an intern with the Jay Z + Damon Dash owned label and quickly became a senior executive and girlfriend to Dame. (Also interesting to note here that Jay Z dated Aaliyah before Dash did.)
Love triangles are nothing new here.
In the years since, Roy has run a very successful fashion label, partially owned by the Jones Apparel Group, and was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2007. Her and Dash have since divorced and they’ve been in a custody battle for years.
“She just doesn’t strike me as that type of person to be that devious or mean to date her ex-husband’s former partner,” former Roc-A-Fella videographer Arthur “Choke No Joke” Alston told StyleBlazer in 2014 about the 42-year-old designer. “She doesn’t come across or carry herself like that. I don’t think so, but I’ve seen it happen. These things can happen… but I don’t see Rachel Roy doing that.”
With all this said, these two closely linked individuals are constantly the topic of rumors.
Nonetheless, as of 2 p.m. EST, Roy made her Instagram account private and made a statement on Twitter after hours of being threatened by Beyoncé fans. “I respect love, marriages, families and strength,” she says. “What shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone, no matter what, is bullying, of any kind.”
We’re not sure what actually happened in Beyoncé and Jay Z’s household. But we do know Shawn “Jay Z” Carter was the one who made vows to his wife, not Rachel Roy. And since Beyoncé has clearly moved on from any transgressions, we should too.
