Angelique Kerber narrowly pulled out a victory against Serena Williams in the final round of the Australian Open, ultimately beating her by just one point.

Serena was stunned on the court in her captivating match against Angelique at the Australian Open today. USA Today reports that it came down to the wire in the very last set of their faceoff with a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

This was a match for the history books as the first set alone lasted 40 minutes. The No. 1 tennis champ gave her very best in today’s game, but she appreciated the challenge that her opponent brought. Serena tearfully congratulated Angelique, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the world, after the game.

“Angie, congratulations. You did so well, you really deserved it. You played the best in the tournament, so let me be the first to congratulate you,” said Serena graciously. “I am so happy for you. I really hope you enjoy this moment.”

She concluded, “You truly played so well in the moment.”

Trust, the German tennis player certainly did. Angelique couldn’t believe that she made it to the final round of the Australian Open, and she was even more amazed that she managed to topple Serena in the final set.

“I was with one leg in the plane for Germany,” Angelique told the crowd, stating that she thought she’d be knocked out in the first round.

“I take my chance to be here in the final and play against Serena. My dream come true tonight, on this night,” she continued, adding how hard she had worked to earn this victory. “My whole life I was working so hard and now I can say that I’m a Grand Slam champion… it sounds so crazy.”
