Scandal made us all feel rightfully uncomfortable with their bold depiction of Olivia Pope’s abortion in the cliff hanger mid season finale.

Now Kerry Washington is speaking out about the controversial on-screen moment:

“[Abortion is] a reality, and more often than not, it’s a really difficult choice to make. The same was true for Olivia,” she told Women’s Wear Daily.

Washington aims to negate the stigma that surrounds abortion by bringing the decision to the forefront of media.

“By not having those moments represented in media, we add to the idea that there’s something shameful to be talked about,” she said. “It’s always important that our storytelling reflects the real experiences of human beings, because it allows us to not feel as alone.”

In a moment where diversity in entertainment is being so heavily discussed, it makes sense for television to not only have an array of colors represented, but also an array of experiences.
