‘The Birth Of A Nation’ smashed Sundance records by scoring a $17.5M distribution deal from Fox Searchlight.
Weinstein Company, Netflix, Paramount & Sony all went head to head to score the winning bid, Variety reported.
The movie, centered around the 1831 slave rebellion led by Nat Turner, scored the biggest deal in Sundance history.
The film, which was written and directed by Nate Parker, is definitely an Oscar contender after being lauded by the critics.
One review raved: “‘The Birth of a Nation’ exists to provoke a serious debate about the necessity and limitations of empathy, the morality of retaliatory violence, and the ongoing black struggle for justice and equality in this country. It earns that debate and then some.”
Not only is this movie amazing because it celebrates one of our historic Black icons, but also it was written and directed by a Black man. Take that #OscarsSoWhite, we’re coming for you!
