Following the national outcry for police reform in Chicago after the death of Laquan McDonald, mayor Rahm Emanuel fired his Chief of Police, Garry McCarty. Less than a week later, the head of the Independent Police Review Authority, Scott Ando resigned.

Now that the US Attorney Lorretta Lynch has announced the Justice Department’s investigation into the McDonald case as well as Chicago officer’s pattern of violating civil rights, another top ranking official is vacating his position.

After twenty-six years of service, the chief of detectives Constantine “Dean” Andrews has decided to retire.

“Chief Andrews felt the timing was best so that the department could move forward with the current leadership transition so a new administration would be able to assemble their own team of senior commanders” said interim Superintendent, John Escalante.

“Chief Andrews made this decision after considerable deliberation which began last week…While I was personally surprised and saddened by his decision, his reasons are a testament to his dedication to the Chicago Police Department” Escalante added in a statement obtained by NBC.

No word as to whether or not the departing officials will be able to evade questioning by the Justice Department for their actions while on the force.

Rahm Emanuel and state’s attorney Anita Alvarez have also been called to resign, they’ve emphatically refused. Instead Emanuel plans to be fully involved with the impending investigation. “[I] pledge the City’s complete cooperation” he said in a statement. This transparency includes the recent decision to support the releasing of video footage which shows the fatal shooting of Ronald Johnson III.

Stay tuned for the latest developments in the investigation.
