Black Pastors Backpedal On Endorsement Of Donald Trump

The Republican Presidential candidate hasn’t been shy about his often racist and bigoted beliefs. Trump most recently had a Black Lives Matter protestor thrown out of his rally and he also tweeted inaccurate statistics about crimes committed by blacks to his millions of followers. Even still, he understands the power of the black vote as is meeting with members of the 100 African American Evangelical pastors and religious leaders this week. His campaign released a statement that following their meeting with Trump, the pastors would hold a press conference and announce their endorsement. Several of the pastors have since denounced the candidate. “Trump is an insult and embarrassment” said invited leader, Bishop Corletta Vaughn of Detroit. A private meeting will still take place but the public press conference has since been cancelled. [CNN]

Mike Brown’s Burial Site Is Still Without A Headstone

A year after the murder of Mike Brown, many residents of Ferguson are questioning why the teens burial site is without a headstone. The only visible marker on his plot are the spray painted initials “M.B.” Supposedly, his mother Lesley McSpadden is worried that it will be defaced similar to makeshift memorials created on the road where her son was gunned down. There was also a tree planted in Brown’s honor in a local park that was defaced within hours of the dedication. McSpadden is also said to be “distracted” by the ongoing wrongful death lawsuits against the city of Ferguson and the former officer that fired the fatal shot, Darren Wilson. [Huffington Post]

Freddie Gray’s Murder Trial Underway In Baltimore

Baltimore has been marred with protests and further instances of police brutality following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. In efforts to maintain an unbiased jury trial, the judge, Barry Williams has placed a gag order on the media’s ability to report on the proceedings. Cameras are not allowed in the court room. Journalists that are attending the proceedings can take written notes but are barred from using their phones to send real-time texts or email updates about the case. William G Porter is the first of six former Baltimore officers that will stand trial for the death of Gray. Porter’s charges include one count of involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. Jury selection for Porter’s case will begin this week. [CNN]

University Of Chicago Closes Amidst Online Threats

The Hyde Park campus for the University Of Chicago has canceled classes for the day after the FBI’s counterterrorism department intercepted a message regarding gun violence. The threat from an unidentified sender eluded to an attack on “the campus quad at 10am” on Monday, November 30th. “Based on the FBI’s assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities” said the University’s President, Robert Zimmer. The campus hospital will remain open but unless it’s an emergency situation, all faculty staff and residents of the area have been advised to “to remain indoors as much as possible.” [Chicago Tribune]

New Study Finds HIV Rates Highest Amongst African Teens

60% of the adolescent cases of HIV are from South Africa and Nigeria. The United States, India, Indonesia and Brazil also have alarming rates of children with the illness. According to UNICEF, less than 50% of these affected children ages 10-19 are on the proper antiviral medications. “We’ve collectively dropped the ball in the second decade of childhood,” said Craig McClure, the chief of UNICEF’s HIV and AIDS division. While women are biologically more susceptible to the HIV infection, illiteracy, child marriage and impoverished conditions are amongst the factors contributing to the lack of awareness and preventative care within these African countries. [The Grio]
