Billboard may have tried to start some beef between Missy Elliott and Nicki Minaj, but Missy shut it down.
Missy just got back, and folks are already starting mess. Ugh.
The music news website published an interview, where Missy discussed who she loves among the younger crop of MCs. Missy told Billboard that she’s not really into watching TV, and she’s way more likely to tune into an underground hip-hop station when she flips on the radio. She’s got nothing against the big names dominating rap now, but she’s listening for who’s doing something different.
“There are some great records out there,” she says. “But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to hear that a lot of songs sound alike.”
Of the newer class, Missy loves Drake and Kendrick Lamar. When Billboard brought up Nicki’s name, Billboard tried it, writing:
“When asked about Nicki Minaj, who is clearly influenced by Elliott, she mock-innocently replies, ‘Oh, she is?’ (Speaking to her influence generally, she adds, ‘Unfortunately, breaking news, there is only one Missy.’)”
It wasn’t outright shade, but it was all Nicki’s Barbz needed to get into Missy’s mentions about the editorially implied slight. Before this grew into a bigger problem, though, the “WTF” lyricist hopped onto her Twitter and squashed the beef by reminding all of her followers that she’s got nothing but love for everyone in the game.
